MEE presents a Really Open Rehearsal – a unique and intimate look at how music is created and performed. Previewing MEE’s 29th season of great music, the Really Open Rehearsal features a behind-the-scenes look at the creation and performance of MEE’s June program and Structures, the 2010 New Music at the Edge commission by composer John H. Wallace. Mr. Wallace will share his inspiration for this mesmerizing piece that offers a musical impression of five of the North Shore’s most intriguing early buildings – the House of the Seven Gables in Salem, the Rebecca Nurse House in Danvers, the Nathaniel Felton, Sr. House in Peabody, the First Religious Society in Newburyport and the Rev. The premiere of Structures, our 2010 New Music at the Edge commission by John H. Wallace, opens our 29th season. Imagine a musical impression of five of the North Shore’s most iconic early buildings. A Salem resident and history buff, Mr. Wallace weaves his passion for the connective tissues of history and architecture into a fascinating and unique work. Structures is programmed in an eclectic matrix of music with emerging themes of light and dark. You will be enchanted by the dark Krommer Bassoon Quartet in E Flat with two violas; beguiled by Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras No. 6; and fascinated by the Reger Serenade for Flute, Violin and Viola.

Pianist Naoko Sugiyama and Cellist Colleen McGary-Smith join violinist Maria Benotti in the Brahms B Major Trio, Fauré Trio in D Minor and the Debussy Violin Sonata. This triptych of beloved works will sparkle with light and color to delight the ear as a garden in bloom delights the eye! July becomes doubly enchanting with a balanced pairing of romantic beauty and impressionistic fantasy.

Taking August Measures: Dancing the Baroque

The energy and vitality of the Baroque dance forth in rarely heard music of Uccellini and Rebel (Caractères de la danse); leap with fiery virtuosity in La Follia by Vivaldi; gesture colorfully in Spanish dances of L’Espagnole, from Les Nations by Couperin. Secular cantatas by Händel and Vivaldi, with 2010 Emerging Artist at the Edge soprano Sarah Bach, and a suite by Boismortier for solo cello – all performed on period instruments – round out this charming offering. Sitting still will be impossible as the urge to dance captures you from heart to toe!

MEE is proud to present as our summer finale a program of string quartets, featuring as guest artist the renowned violinist and chamber music performer Daniel Stepner. Joined by MEE’s core performers, Mr. Stepner will lead MEE performers in the Beethoven Op. 74 “Harp Quartet”, Prokofiev Quartet No. 2, and Mark Berger’s Notturno. Some of our most scenic locations will frame this powerful yet elegant finish to a beautiful summer of great music.
